Blowing snow and ice plague drive through Woodstock, Drumbo

The December drive between Woodstock and Waterloo Region has been one to remember, and one many commuters will hope to forget.

The Thursday morning commute once again saw treacherous road conditions, with heavy blowing snow and ice plaguing the drive.

Whiteout conditions, numerous vehicles in the ditch, and snow-covered lanes were reported to the 570 NewsRadio Traffic Centre.

Oxford County, including Woodstock, was under a yellow warning for snowfall on Thursday, calling for 20-40 cm of snow to fall by the end of the day.

The areas north of London were set to be hit the hardest.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region noted that blowing snow made conditions even more dangerous.

Environment Canada warned of northwesterly winds gusting to near 50 km/h through that stretch.

Sergeant Ed Sanchuk said OPP were responding to numerous collisions throughout the morning drive.

In Waterloo Region, Thursday morning snowfall was brief; it was the frozen slush and snow from the day before that caused the most trouble.

After a milder Wednesday afternoon, anything that wasn’t shovelled froze overnight. It meant sidewalks, driveways and parking lots were especially slippery.

“Really cold air moved in again (Wednesday) night, and we’re going to remain below seasonal for the rest of the week,” said 570 NewsRadio Weather Specialist Denise Andreacchi.

“There is a chance for more snowfall moving in early Saturday.”

Snowfall amounts on Saturday could be around 2-4 cm.
