An early holiday present for Kitchener commuters.
A portion of Ottawa Street South through Westmount Road East is now open.
Phase 2 of the road improvements on Ottawa began back in July and included multi-use paths on both sides of Ottawa, new lighting, as well as a new roundabout at Westmount.
The work on Ottawa between Pinedale Drive to Mowat Boulevard had drivers detouring using Fischer-Hallman Road.
The Region of Waterloo announced the full reopening of the roadway on Friday, though it said crews could still be on site preparing for work next year.
“This will include surface asphalt paving, landscaping, and boulevard restoration once the remaining old hydro poles are removed,” reads a post by the region.
“If you notice any work happening in this area before next year, it may be related to the removal of the remaining utility poles.”
Phase 1 of the improvements on Ottawa began in 2024, focusing on the area of roadway between Fischer-Hallman Road and Pinedale Drive.
That involved a heavy amount of work near Fischer-Hallman to make the intersection more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, including pedestrian islands and raised crosswalks.
The total cost of the project rings in at $10.2 million.
