Downtown Elmira is set to see a lot of construction in the next several years as upgrades are needed to a major roadway.
The construction on Arthur Street will begin in 2027/2028. It will see the repair of a large portion of the roadway from Kenning Place to South Street East.
It would include work on 940 metres of the street, as well as the Canagagigue Creek Bridge.
This week, public consultations are set to begin.
The upgrades are needed because a portion of the road, sidewalks, underground infrastructure, and bridge are all nearing the end of their lifespan.
The Region of Waterloo noted that some improvements will be made for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.
“These upgrades will help keep Elmira’s downtown vibrant, accessible, and well-connected for years to come,” said the region in a Facebook post.

A public consultation meeting to gather feedback on the project will be held on Tuesday evening at the Gale Presbyterian Church, at 10 Barnswallow Dr., from 7-9 p.m.
Regional officials are set to present some preliminary designs for the roadway and get feedback from the public.
An online survey is also available on the EngageWR project page until Dec. 19.
