Guelph police are warning residents to be cautious when interacting with strangers after a distraction-style theft in that city’s south end on Wednesday.
Police say a woman visiting from India was walking in the Goodwin Drive and Laughland Lane area, by Clair and Victoria, when she was approached by an unknown couple around 11 a.m.
They struck up a conversation and eventually handed the woman a $20 bill.
They then gave the woman a hug, in the process removing the $6,000 gold chain from around her neck.
The victim didn’t realize what had happened until she returned home. The chain has tremendous sentimental value. It was received as a wedding present over 40 years ago.
Police described the suspects as being in their 40s with fair skin and speaking English with a Middle Eastern accent. They were in a vehicle which was last seen on Goodwin Drive heading towards Victoria Road South.
