Man charged after multiple false reports to Guelph police

A Guelph man is facing charges of mischief after two separate instances of false reports made to police in the Royal City.

The instances stem back to January, when police say that the man called police to report that he had been assaulted.

It’s alleged that the man then called Guelph police ten minutes later, expressing frustration that police had not yet arrived on scene. Despite being told that officers were responding to high-priority calls, that man placed another call 16 minutes later and claimed that there was a “live shooter” in his building.

Understandably, that claim is said to have prompted an “expedited response” from police, though officers were then told by the man that he had made up that claim to elicit a faster response from the service.

Guelph police cautioned the man about making false reports, but no charges were laid.

As recently as July 6, police say that the same man had contacted them to report a suspected impaired driver, prompting officers to respond to an unspecified area without any results. It was later determined that the call was also false.

The suspected impaired driver was actually the caller’s mother, who was at home and had not been drinking.

That woman told police her son was upset with her, as she had kicked him out during a visit.

On Tuesday, Guelph police arrested that 25-year-old Guelph man on two counts of public mischief. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 24.
