Rangers open playoffs with 6-4 victory on home ice

It was the exact opening to the playoffs Rangers fans wanted to see, kicking things off on home ice with 6-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit.

Things looked solid for the Blueshirts in the first, with goaltender Christian Kirsch holding the line and letting in nothing on three shots, while Sam O’reilly scoring the first goal of the game ten minutes in to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.

Saginaw wouldn’t go down without a fight however, coming back strong in the second with two goals of their own to take the lead before O’reilly would tie things up again. The Spirit persisted earning a third goal to have the lead as the game entered the third.

The third period was truly a back and forth affair, with Christian Humphreys kicking things off, tying the game at three a piece just under five minutes in. Saginaw would respond with one of their own at the halfway point of the period before the Rangers found their rhythm.

Humphreys got his second of the game to tie things up for the last time, as Cameron Reid would get the game winner less than a minute later. And Matthew Andonovski would score one more on an empty netter just seconds before the game wrapped up.

The playoffs continue this weekend, with Sunday seeing the action at the Memorial Auditorium once again. Puck drop for that game will be at 7:00 p.m. and you can catch all the action on 570 NewsRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
