There is a lengthy closure for a busy stretch of Victoria Street in Kitchener to allow for the completion of a road improvement project.
The Region of Waterloo has closed Victoria Street South to through traffic between Lawrence Avenue and Fischer-Hallman Road.
That closure is expected to remain in place until November 2025.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured through Ira Needles Boulevard, to Highland Road, over to Lawrence Avenue or Belmont Avenue.
Westbound traffic will need to follow a detour through Lawrence Avenue or Belmont Avenue, over to Highland Road, up Ira Needles Boulevard.

It’s all for a $12-million dollar road improvement project, set to bring a swath of improvements to the area including:
- Separated bike lanes and sidewalk replacement between Lawrence Avenue and Westmount Road.
- Multi-use paths from Fischer-Hallman Road to Westmount Road.
- Pedestrian refuge islands and traffic medians.
- Upgrades to traffic signals, transit stops, shelters and lighting.
- Replacing and upsizing storm sewers and underground infrastructure.
- New asphalt pavement.
While that closure on Victoria does stretch through a number of high-volume intersections, regional staff note that northbound and southbound traffic will be maintained through Victoria on both Fischer-Hallman Road and Westmount Road. In the case that two-way traffic cannot get through those intersections, flagging operations and police officers will help to direct traffic.
Be aware, however, that short term full closures of each of those intersections will be required at night for asphalt paving, expected to wrap in late fall 2025 or spring 2026. Advance notice of those closures will be provided through the Region of Waterloo.
The region has also offered to provide updates on this project via text – local residents can text 57555 with the code VCTA for the latest information.
