What’s open and closed on Canada Day in Waterloo Region

July 1 hits on a Tuesday this year giving some businesses whiplash opening Monday to close Tuesday and other taking the opportunity to offer a four-day weekend.
Here is a look at what is open and closed across the region on Tuesday July 1, so you can make the most of your holiday.
Food and retail
Most major grocery chains will be closed on Tuesday or may be operating on reduced hours. Smaller grocery chains and convenience stores may still be open. All LCBO location will be closed.
The following Beer Store locations may remain open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.:
- 200 Franklin Blvd, Cambridge
- 150 Holiday Inn Dr, Cambridge (Drive Thru Only)
- 250 Bleams Rd, Kitchener
- 875 Highland Rd. W., Unit 80, Kitchener
- 70 Weber St. N, Waterloo
- 624 King St. N, Waterloo (Drive Thru Only)
Fairview Mall, Conestoga Mall and the Cambridge Centre will all be closed on July 1. Most retail stores will also be closed.
Many restaurants and cafes will remain open but may be operating on different hours. You can check individual place hours on their website or by calling the location.
Government and institutions
All federal and provincial government offices are closed on Tuesday as well as Service Canada locations and Canada Post.
All regional and municipal administrative services will be closed. Administrative offices at the airport will be closed but service will not be affected.
The Service First Call Centre remains open.
Transportation
Grand River Transit buses will operate on a holiday service schedule which is noted on all schedule routes. The ION will also operate on a holiday schedule.
MobilityPLUS service will also be in operation. However, regularly scheduled subscription trips will automatically be cancelled. Customers can rebook those trips by calling 519-744-2241.
Starting July 1 there will also be changes to GRT fares. Cash fares and single ticket transfers will increase from $3.75 to $4. The age for children to ride free will also be increased from four to six years of age.
Activities
Most city facilities will be closed Tuesday including indoor recreation facilities. Indoor pools and splashpads will be closed and arena spaces, including The Aud will be closed. Activa Sportsplex, including the walking track, is open on Tuesday.
All public libraries will remain closed.
If the weather proves kind, there are many outdoor activities available on July 1. The Moses Springer outdoor pool in Waterloo will remain open. Harry Class, Idlewood, Kiwanis, Wilson outdoor pools in Kitchener are open, as well as Kitchener golf courses.
Celebrations
The City of Cambridge is hosting its Canada Day celebration at Riverside Park. Activities will run from 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ending with a fireworks show.
In Waterloo, Canada Day fireworks are only permitted between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and are only permitted on private property. The same rules are in place for the City of Kitchener. Failure to comply with these rules could result in a $1,500 fine.
