The new Prime Minister of Canada has made a very good impression on the long-standing mayor of Kitchener.
Berry Vrbanovic spoke with 570 NewsRadio about his thoughts on Mark Carney and his new government, after two major gatherings of city leaders and higher-tier government officials from all across Canada.
Those were the Big City Mayors caucus and the meeting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, late last week.
“Myself and many others were very impressed with what we heard,” Vrbanovic said about Carney. “The man received three standing ovations over the course of his speech, which certainly was a good sign and tells you how people were feeling about what they were hearing.”
Vrbanovic said Carney is clearly “a prime minister who has a very definite agenda, big ambitions, you know, big goals, wants everyone working together.”
The mayor was happy that Carney seems to be continuing the engagement with cities the Trudeau government established, “particularly now, as we tackle the major challenges facing our country, it really is going to take increased dialogue and effort …. with a true Team Canada approach.”
Vrbanovic was also encouraged by what he took away from the gatherings from the new Liberal government’s various cabinet ministers.
He said he appreciated how two mayors from major American cities joined in on their events, expressing their opposition to the Donald Trump administration’s tariff policies.
