Increased police presence at faith locations following attacks in Iran: WRPS

Waterloo Regional Police Service say there will be an increased police presence at faith-based locations across the region in light of the ongoing situation in Iran.

The announcement comes a day after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader , Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The attacks have brought a mixed response from residents of Iran and Iranians living across the world. While some are celebrating the death of the supreme leader and therefore his iron grip on the nation, others are critical of U.S. interference.

As tensions escalate, Iranians living across the globe are preparing to celebrate Nowruz.

Norwuz, or the Persian New Year, coincides with the spring equinox and falls on March 20. The 3,000 year old celebration is rooted in Zoroastrianism but is now celebrated by Persians and others worldwide.

“WRPS members will continue to support all individuals and communities during this difficult time,” police said in a statement on X. “We are working closely with our local, provincial, and national partners to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Waterloo Region.”

March also mark Persian Heritage Month across Ontario.
