Winner of Farwell4Hire bought ticket last minute; turned $100 into $121K

Jeff Wenzel is taking home a huge chunk of money in the Farwell4Hire jackpot that was revealed on Friday.

It’s a sizable sum for cystic fibrosis research and a record-breaking take-home prize for the lucky ticket holder. It was just after 8:30 a.m. on Friday when the raffle hit a new campaign record, soaring past the 2023 total of $192,335 to the $243,540 jackpot milestone.

That means this year’s fundraiser winner will be taking home $121,770.

“That’s amazing, super exciting,” Wenzel told The Mike Farwell Show.

Originally, the Kitchener native did not pick up the call from Farwell, prompting the host to leave a voicemail. Later, Wenzel said that he was in a Friday meeting at work where the phone signals are bad.

He was planning on buying a ticket for a while, but finally, on Friday morning the same day as the draw, decided it was time to “get in on it.”

Wenzel bought the $100 ticket, which turned into more than $121,000 in a matter of hours.

He said he is “super excited” and might speak to his boss and see if Monday can be a celebration day.

The last few days of fundraising haven’t been easy on 570 NewsRadio Host Mike Farwell, with milestones quickly reached, leading to Farwell enduring an “extremely hot” chicken wing live on air from Morty’s Pub on Thursday.

Community support also led Farwell, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, to don the memorabilia of a rival team he insists “will not be named,” happily removed after surpassing that $100,000 take-home goal.

Donations can also still be made to the campaign, through the Waterloo Region Community Foundation here.
