Coyote spotted on University of Guelph campus

The University of Guelph confirmed that a coyote was spotted on the west side of the campus on May 26.

In a release, the university details that the animal was near the University Centre near the food delivery area.

“The coyote was not aggressive and there is no reason to believe it poses a major safety risk. Coyotes usually avoid people,” the release notes.

However, the situation prompted the university to issue a few tips to people in case they come across one.

Some of the information includes:

  • Do not approach or touch a coyote. Keep your distance and a coyote will likely avoid you.
  • Do not turn your back or run from a coyote. Stay calm and back away.
  • Stand tall, wave your hands and make a lot of noise.
  • Carry a flashlight to scare off coyotes at night.
  • Do not let your pets chase a coyote.

Officials also ask that people never feed a coyote or wildfire, which makes them less fearful of humans.

If an animal becomes aggressive or poses a risk, the university is asking people to call 911.
