It has been a tough go for small businesses in recent years.
Dating back to the pandemic, these companies have been forced to find ways to adapt to changing markets both locally and globally while trying to navigate things like working from home or a shift to online retail.
With a second Canada Post strike looming, six months after the first work stoppage, again businesses could be forced to adapt or die.
“I’m not sure how many gut punches a small business can take,” said Greg Durocher, President, CEO, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce.
He said he’s watched as companies have begun looking elsewhere for potential solutions. He added, they won’t wait around forever.
“Believe me, small businesses will survive, with or without them. That’s what Canada Post I think has to worry about and in particular maybe the union needs to worry about that small business will abandon them.”
President, CEO, Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Ian McLean echoed those statements adding the optics for Canada Post are less than ideal.
“I don’t think it’s in the post office or the public’s interest for there to be a disruption to service. Particularly when it’s been a challenge over the longer term for the post office itself.”
McLean went on to say, “I think with every passing day, people are realizing that they have to take more responsibility or make every option available. Particularly if you’re a small business make every option one you provide yourself.”
He said finding ways to adapt is something small businesses do best.
“If the service isn’t there, business will find a way, they always do. That’s what they do. They innovate, they adapt, they show resilience. That’s what our members do. That’s what all small businesses do.”
