For the third time since Monday, the City of Cambridge extended its snow event, barring people from parking on the street to allow crews to clean the roads.
In an updated statement, the municipality alluded to the fact that the message has not reached all residents, noting that it has ticketed 297 vehicles since Jan. 5 and towed three.
“Residents are encouraged to exercise caution while travelling, to keep roads clear of parked vehicles during snow events, to allow additional travel time and to please be patient while we work to respond to ongoing and lengthy periods of snow and ice,” Rob Axiak, the city’s manager said in the press release.
In the past week, a wintry system has caused messy commutes in Waterloo Region. Snow, ice pellets and freezing rain poured on the community, prompting the city to declare a snow event. Since then, temperatures have risen, causing slippery conditions. Cambridge said that salt trucks and staff are “working around the clock” responding to calls from people.
It notes that more than 1,370 residents have given feedback to the municipality related to snow concerns, like uncleared sidewalks, snowy streets and challenges by parked cars.
In a snow event, Cambridge, like many other cities, prioritizes main roads, secondary streets and emergency routes among hills and bridges.
The release also mentioned that there have been “widespread constraints” around road salt because of the earlier start to snow this year. Contractors in Toronto noted recently that there is “salt rationing” happening.
“The city is making use of readily available local winter sand supplies to supplement its use of salt to treat the roadways as is normal practice,” Cambridge said.
During a snow event residents and businesses are prohibited from parking on streets. It is not allowed until Friday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 p.m.
Since the first snow event was declared this winter season on Nov. 28, Cambridge has laid 2,631 tickets and towed over a dozen vehicles.
