Kitchener schools closed due to measles reopen Tuesday

Two Kitchener high schools that closed last week due to confirmed cases of the measles reopened on Tuesday.

Both Eastwood Collegiate Institute and St. Mary’s High School were shut down May 15 and 16, with potential exposures to the virus on May 7 and May 8.

Time was needed to make sure the proper contamination protocols were put in place, such as vaccination verification.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) confirmed both schools would be reopening after a long weekend of “thorough review” of immunization records.

“This process required significant time, care and coordination, including dedicated efforts over the weekend,” read a release from the WCDSB.

The public school board says some students may have received an “exclusion message” through their online school accounts (such as School-Day or via email), telling them they were not able to return to school.
