After twelve years at the helm, Woolwich Mayor Sandy Shantz has announced she will not seek re-election.
In a statement posted to the township website and shared on social media, Shantz said it was a difficult decision reached after much reflection.
She said while it’s not an easy choice, the time was right to step away to spend more time with her family and friends.
The statement goes on to say serving the residents of Woolwich Township has been one of the greatest honours of her life. She expressed her deep gratitude to the community, the leaders, volunteers and staff who helped her along the way.
Shantz began her political career as a trustee with the Waterloo Region District School Board. Two of those years she served as chair. Shantz was then elected councillor before being elected mayor 12 years ago.
“I leave this role with a full heart and great confidence in the future of Woolwich. We are well-positioned for continued success, and I know our community will choose thoughtful and capable leadership in the years ahead,” the statement reads.
“Thank you for the trust, kindness, and support you have shown me throughout this journey. It has truly been a privilege to serve you,” the statement concludes.
Ontarians will elect their next municipal governments on Oct. 26, 2026.
