Thursday marked secondary school suspension day in Waterloo Region for high school students who did not have up-to-date vaccination records.
There are 920 high schoolers out of the classroom until their records are updated.
The suspensions are handed out by Region of Waterloo Public Health under the Immunization of School Pupils Act.
“Vaccination is the best way to protect against serious illness,” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, medical officer of health for Region of Waterloo Public Health.
“With the current increase of measles in southern Ontario, it is especially important to strengthen immunization rates among children and youth. Ensuring that students in our schools are protected through immunization also helps to keep the broader community safe and healthy.”
Back in mid-March, over 5,000 students were given suspension orders to have their records updated by May 8.
Public health officials said the students suspended now need to book a vaccine appointment, report to public health, and expect a long wait time for appointments.
Elementary school suspension day was back on April 2, where 1,624 students with out-of-date vaccination records were suspended.
