The Kitchener Rangers have punched their ticket to the second round of the OHL playoffs, after finishing off the Flint Firebirds 2-1 on Friday to win the series 4-1.
Tanner Lam would get the first goal of the game six minutes in the game, but Alex Kostov of Flint would tie things up before the end of the first period. But it wouldn’t take long in the second period as Christian Humphreys would score the eventual game winner just a minute into that period.
Kitchener’s penalty kill managed to hold off five power play opportunities, including a five minute match penalty to Luke Ellinas for slew footing. Jackson Parsons stopped 24/25 shots on the night, giving him first star honours.
570 colour commentator Paul Fixter said it was hard fought series that included “brutal play” from both teams.
“I give Flint credit for really battling, but Kitchener in the end found a way to get the job done and get it done at home in front of 7,000 people,” said Fixter.
Next up for the Rangers will be a series date with the Windsor Spitfires, who finished second in the Western Conference and also won their series against the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds on Friday.
Updates on a schedule and tickets are expected this week.
