Flags will fly at half-mast for the next three days at City of Cambridge facilities to honour Erwin Nelson, a former mayor who has passed away.
Nelson died March 22 at Saint Luke’s Place in Hespeler, where he lived the last 25 years. He was 93.
Nelson was one of the last surviving members of Cambridge’s very first city council. He represented Ward 14.
He also served as a regional councillor and Cambridge mayor in the ’70s, and founded Nelson Funeral Home in Hespeler.
“In addition to his professional and political life, Erwin was deeply involved in the community,” read a statement from the City of Cambridge. “He managed minor hockey teams in Hespeler, was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, and held numerous political roles over the years.”
A private family funeral is being arranged, along with a celebration of life which will be held at the Hespeler Legion – Branch 272. No date has been set.
In lieu of flowers, Nelson’s family is requesting donations for Saint Luke’s Place Building Fund.
