Waterloo approves space for two new grocery stores

Two Waterloo neighbourhoods could be getting new grocery stores in the near future.

Waterloo City Council approved several amendments Monday that would allow “food stores” to be built in the Phillip Street and Columbia Street West area, as well as on Weber Street North, just south of University Avenue East.

The exact property addresses in question are 388 Phillip Street and 200 Weber Street North.

At 200 Weber specifically, the area can now support a proposed grocery store with offices to be built on the second floor.

On Phillip, the site now allows a store covering a space up to 5,500 square metres, as well as “a horizontal connection to a vertical geothermal system from the neighbouring property.”

Councillors noted the new land use designations would also help support more job creation in those neighbourhoods.
