A major crackdown on retail crime in Waterloo Region has led to more than 20 arrests with over 40 charges laid.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) conducted a four-day retail crime initiative last week.
The North Division Direct Action Response Team (DART) targeted theft incidents, repeat offenders, and organized retail crime activities at businesses in Kitchener and Waterloo.
It was launched following a rising number of reported crimes relating to shoplifting and other retail thefts in the community.
The enforcement operation resulted in 23 individuals being arrested and more than 40 criminal charges were laid, including theft under $5,000.
Police also recovered stolen merchandise, valued at approximately $1,450.
WRPS said they worked closely with loss prevention officers and other retail partners to identify several prolific and repeat offenders.
The service is urging businesses to report retail crime and suspicious activity immediately, and they’re working closely with the Retail Council of Canada to continue to combat the issue.
