It was a costly St. Patrick’s Day weekend for some students who took part in an unsanctioned street party in the City of Waterloo, despite a court injunction.
“We are disappointed that students and others chose to violate the court order, and put themselves and the community at risk,” wrote Nicole Papke, Waterloo’s Director of Municipal Enforcement, in a release.
On Tuesday, the City of Waterloo issued its first batch of data from bylaw’s Paddy’s patrol in the university district.
Municipal enforcement responded to 129 complaint calls from 5 p.m. Saturday to Tuesday at 7 a.m. It includes those relating to the big street party that broke out Saturday in the Marshall Street and Regina Street area.
A total of 36 charges were issued and 25 of them came with a fine of $800. The bulk related to a nuisance party while the others were for nuisance noise and occupying a roof. There were also orders issued relating to lot maintenance/property standards complaints, with 18 clean-ups required.
“The injunction was a tool we hoped would discourage the dangerous unsanctioned street gathering, and we are thankful there were no significant injuries,” said Papke.
A better picture of the enforcement action over St. Patrick’s Day weekend will be provided once Waterloo Regional Police release their preliminary numbers, which is expected later this week.
