New year, new rules for lodging homes in Kitchener.
A lodging house is defined by the city as a dwelling where five or more people, not including the homeowner, can rent a unit, similar to an Airbnb-style rental.
As of Jan. 1, all lodging homeowners are required to have a licence and undergo mandatory inspections to ensure a safe and clean environment is available for rent.
Last summer, the City of Kitchener estimated as many as 1,100 lodging and short-term rentals were being operated in the city, but only 20 were licensed.
The new Lodging House Bylaw also has a focus on each such rental having one dedicated responsible person for the unit, for clear communication.
A release from the city reads, “The bylaw aims to improve the City’s ability to ensure public safety, consumer protection, and nuisance control while also reducing barriers for property owners.”
Details on how to apply for a license can be found here.
