Umbrella march to take over King Street Thursday

The United Way Waterloo Region Communities is hosting its annual March of 1,000 Umbrellas on Thursday to raise awareness about the roll “umbrella organizations” play in the community.

They use the term “umbrella” to represent the way groups, like the United Way, shelter communities from the extreme effects of complex issues they face.

Umbrella organizations help coordinate the efforts of local charities and non-profits to address overlapping crises like homelessness, food insecurity, poverty and mental health challenges.

Today’s march will see hundreds of participants make their way from Waterloo City Hall to Kitchener City Hall. The marchers will each be carrying an umbrella.

It begins at 11:00 a.m. and participants will march down King Street starting around 11:30.

Entertainment and refreshments will greet them at Carl Zehr Square, when they arrive.
