Feds announce millions in funding for affordable housing in Waterloo Region, Guelph

Members of various levels of government gathered in Kitchener on Thursday morning to announce $96 million in federal funding from the Affordable Housing Fund that will go towards projects in Waterloo Region, Guelph, Brantford and several other communities.

The announcement was made at 82 Wilson Ave. in Kitchener by Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, Kitchener South–Hespeler MP Valerie Bradford, Waterloo MP Bardish Chagger,  Kitchener–Conestoga MP Tim Louis, Cambridge MP Bryan May and more were on hand for the announcement.

The site is amongst the projects receiving funding, with $2.4 million going towards building 48 homes to be offered to low-income households on the Region of Waterloo’s social housing waitlist.

“This is affordable housing so that we ensure that people here in the region, and frankly across the country, have an affordable and safe place to call home,” Sudds said at the press conference.

The federal money will go towards building 336 new homes, as well as aiding in the repair of more than 7,000 existing units.

“Everyone deserves a place to call their own and the Affordable Housing Fund is one way we’re helping make that a reality for Canadians,” Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, said in a press release. “We will keep investing in affordable housing projects like the ones announced today, and working with partners across the country, to end the housing crisis.”

As of March, the federal government has committed $50.97 billion to aid in building more than 146,000 units and repairing over 286,000 units across the country.
