Train derailment road closure cleared in North Dumfries

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The township of North Dumfries has provided an update on a lengthy road closure caused by a train derailment in the area on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred just west of the community of Ayr on Trussler Road.

In a statement provided to CityNews 570, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) explained that a westward Canadian Pacific Railway train was entering Wolverton Yard near Ayr when three loaded automotive flat cars derailed.

The organization stated that one rail car derailed upright, another car was left leaning and a third car was flipped onto its side, causing the main track at the rail crossing to be blocked.

According to the township, there are no hazardous materials involved in the train derailment; the involved rail cars are said to have been carrying vehicles and intermodal shipping containers.

The TSB said that the incident occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m. on Saturday.

Crews worked overnight to remove the derailed train cars and make repairs.

Removal of the derailed rail cars and repairs to the tracks were also completed this afternoon.

The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation, though preliminary reports from CPKC show there were no mechanical issues with rail equipment or track infrastructure.

Providing an update on Monday afternoon around 3:45 p.m., the Township of North Dumfries said the rail crossing on Trussler Road west of Ayr has reopened to traffic.
