Waterloo Mayor Jaworsky will not seek re-election

Waterloo will have a new mayor when the next municipal election rolls around in October.

Mayor Dave Jaworsky announced Thursday afternoon, on Kitchener Today with Brian Bourke on CityNews 570, he will not be seeking re-election.

“I really feel we've (city) that we've accomplished so much in these eight years, and feel it's time to pass the baton to someone new.” Jaworsky said. “I want to give a few months for, great Waterloo community leaders — to look in the mirror — talk with family and friends — to see if it's their time to seek election.”

Jaworsky is in his second term as mayor. He was first elected in 2014.

“You really have to commit for four years so when I was thinking about this back in November … because next term ends this November 14th, I was thinking … should I do this for one more year? Or five more years? And when it's a seven day a week, whether you be mayor or counsellor …. 2026 sounds like a long way away and with the city of Waterloo on a great trajectory, and tons of things happening this year, now is just the right time to say I'm going to pass the baton.” he added.

Jaworsky sees climate change being a really important issue for the next mayor.

“The next person who comes in as mayor, really has to have an eight year time frame viewpoint … maybe they only stay four years, but I think it would be great to have an eight year viewpoint to tackle climate change, to look at equity, economic recovery.”

During the pandemic, Jaworsky said what he missed the most were the events and meeting residents.

“If I look back on my most fabulous times, it's with my Grade 5 councillors for a day … They're just so wonderful at age 10.”

Municipal elections are set for October 24.
