New Kitchener clinic puts focus on neurological issues

Giving brains a voice — that's the goal at HeadworX — a neurological clinic that opened recently near Grand River Hospital in Kitchener.

Kris Fawcett Beshara, Clinic Manager, says they've partnered with VoxNeuro in Hamilton, using new technology that monitors a patient's brain function while they complete a series of tests.

“There's the standard testing for checking your brain's health through EEGs, MRIs, CT scans,” she tells 570 NEWS, “But it doesn't really allow to see what the brain is actually doing.”

HeadworX tests monitor your brain's three domains focusing on concentration, information processing, and memory.

“It allows us to see and watch and monitor closely for any decline in any form so we can catch things before they get too bad.”

Fawcett-Beshara says this can be used for anything from monitoring memory decline, to better understanding the aftermath of a concussion.

“We now have this quantitative data that shows, 'yes, your memory is lacking.' How can we better help that so we don't have to put patients through unnecessary testing?”

The clinic is run by Dr. Abdel Kaleel, the team doctor for the Kitchener Rangers, and is the first of its kind in Waterloo Region.

Fawcett-Beshara says the clinic is also working to incorporate new technology that will help to treat neurological pain.
