Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang has been named the Commissioner of Public Health and Emergency Services for the region.

On top of that, the region will name her the permanent Medical Officer of Health, but they have to file an application with the Ministry of Health to do so.

“I am very pleased that Dr. Wang has been appointed to this position,” Regional Chair Karen Redman said in a release, “Hsiu-Li is well-known and highly respected in this community and she has done an exceptional job safeguarding the health of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Dr. Wang stated she's pleased to be appointed to the position.

“I look forward to building on the work that our dedicated Public Health and Paramedic Services teams have done to promote and protect the health and well-being of Waterloo Region residents,” she said.

Dr. Wang took over as the acting Medical Officer of Health when Dr. Liana Nolan went on medical leave.

The region says once Dr. Nolan is ready to return, she will move into another role in the region.
