Local school cancels trip to Italy amid coronavirus concerns

By Christine Clark

Coronavirus concerns have a local school trip to Italy, postponed until late May.

Resurrection Catholic Secondary School students were scheduled to head overseas this month.  However, the spread of COVID-19 has led to that country experiencing the most serious outbreak in Europe.

Italy has reported about 3,000 cases of the virus, and more than 100 deaths.

Northern Italy is where the outbreak has been the most serious.

That area of the country is on the Canadian government's list of places Canadians should avoid non-essential travel to.

Although, our local students would not have been heading to that area, John Shewchuk with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board tells 570 News, the decision was made out of an “abundance of caution.”

There are no Waterloo Region District School Board school trips to Italy planned this year.
