City of Cambridge announces $100-million ‘Gaslight District’ project

The City of Cambridge is hoping to boost economic and social activity in the downtown Galt area through their new $100-million project– The Gaslight District.
The Gaslight District will be built on the existing Southworks and Tiger Brand properties and will mean the addition of over 100 high tech jobs, retail and restaurant spaces, a public square and 400 new residential units.
“The City’s vision is clear: revitalize the downtown core, create opportunities for diverse employment, and through collaboration with our partners, leverage opportunities for increased business investment,” said Mayor Craig. “With the building of the pedestrian bridge, the transformation of the Old Post Office and more, the vision is becoming a reality.”
HIP Developments, Grand Innovations and Conestoga College are also partnering with the project.
In a release, Scott Higgins with HIP Developments says the new Gaslight District will re-imagine and transform the historic Southworks and Tiger Brand properties into a thriving urban environment that will foster creativity and innovative thinking across multiple disciplines.
“It will be a mix of historic buildings and modern living where people can experience both the past and present of Cambridge.”
HIP and Grand Innovations say they expect occupancy to begin in 2017, while construction at Southworks will be completed in phases between 2018 and 2020.
