John Galt Day rolls out early in Guelph

This is the Civic long weekend, and in the City of Guelph they are marking John Galt Day today –  a few days before the actual Civic Holiday Monday.

Jen Rafter is the City of Guelph’s Culture Program and Event Coordinator.

She tells 570 News that this civic holiday is meant to celebrate an historical figure who is important in the founding of a city.

Rafter says Galt cut down the first maple tree and gave Guelph it’s name in 1827.

Galt was a well-known Scottish novelist.  He is creditted with planning guelph’s unique radial design.

She says they are celebrating today by closing down Wilson and Carden streets in the Downtown. Farmers Market vendors will be set up on the street.

Live entertainment includes a juggler, illusionist, hula-hooper and fire-dancer.

Events run until 2pm.
