Referendum held 100 years ago to switch from Berlin to Kitchener

A significant anniversary for Kitchener.

It was 100 years ago today residents voted in a referendum to change the city’s name to Kitchener from Berlin.

Less than 350 people actually cast ballots.

The move came amid rising First World War tensions.

The city took its name from Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, who died that year while serving as the Secretary of State for War of the United Kingdom.

The name was officially changed a few months later: on September 1st, 1916.
