Police make another arrest in international drug smuggling investigation

Waterloo regional police say another arrest has been made in an ongoing international drug smuggling investigation.

In September, a 20-year-old Cambridge woman was arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport.

It’s alleged 25 kilograms of suspected cocaine was found hidden in her checked luggage.

The incident sparked an extended investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

On June 11, police executed a search warrant in Markham and arrested a man who is believed to be linked to a sophisticated drug network that facilitated the Cambridge woman’s travel from Toronto to Hong Kong.

The 36-year-old from Markham has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession for the purpose of exportation.

Police said their investigation into the drug network remains ongoing.
