Local funding has been announced as part of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, and it means good news for the Kitchener Masjid.
The announcement was made on Sunday morning by Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre, Raj Saini. FedDev Ontario has approved up to $197,585 in funding towards renovations to the Kitchener Masjid towards a total project cost of $757,000.
The building on Victoria Street used to be a warehouse and so some of the flooring is worn out and there’s a need for a updated prayer hall, as well as HVAC and sound systems.
Manager of the Kitchener Masjid, Mirsad Kaplani said that the money will also help by adding a proper gym and youth centre.
“Youth are the new generation so we are investing in youth. They need space so they can come together and we can start many initiatives.”
The Kitchener Masjid provides programs and services to more than 15,000 Muslims in the Kitchener area and Kaplani said that various cultural and ethnic organizations will also have access to the space.
Phase one is expected to be completed in August of this year. Phase two will include an updated prayer hall and library.
