Licence plate recognition vehicle to roll out in Waterloo

It’s a new way of ticketing vehicles; a way the City of Waterloo says is more accurate and safer.

A Licence Plate Recognition Vehicle will be on display today.

With a camera, it will be able to track parked cars, take note of licence plates and GPS Coordinates.

The city hopes this will increase available parking spots, reduce bogus tickets, increase officer safety and maximize staff resources.

Shane Turner with the City of Waterloo says Guelph also uses this type of vehicle.

“We’ve worked with them to understand all the ins and outs of the program as they put their program into place.”

He adds it won’t be on city streets until the end of March/beginning of April and will patrol higher density areas such as uptown Waterloo and Northdale.

“It’s capable of driving up and down the street and recording information on vehicles and recording the date and time the vehicle is parked there.”

You can stop by RIM Park (2001 University Ave. E., front lobby) from noon-8 pm today to check out the vehicle for yourself and ask any questions you may have.
