Fire officials encourage safety this Halloween

Waterloo Fire Rescue is out with a reminder to take some time this Halloween to focus on safety when considering costumes, decorating and trick-or-treating.
John Percy is the Public Education Officer with Waterloo Fire Rescue encourages the use battery operated candles and flash lights instead of candles.
“They are going to be a lot safer and they are not going to start any fires. If you do need to use real candles, they have to do it in a safe manner. Keep them out of the reach of children and pets, if they are going to be kept on a table make sure there is nothing underneath that could burn, and do not leave them burning when you are out of the room.”
Percy also says to avoid overloading extension cords and to check all decorations and wiring for any cracks or breaks.
“Instead of using extension cords, use a power bar that have a safe element such as a breaker or a fuse inside.”
When you going door-to-door, make sure costumes are bright, reflective and labelled flame-resistant Percy says and adds parents should accompany children and inspect all treats before children eat them.
Waterloo Fire Rescue also says that this is a perfect time to change and check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms as we prepare for Daylight savings time on Sunday.
