Damage from Dollarama fire in Waterloo expected to be in the millions

Criminal charges have been laid after a fire destroyed the Dollarama at Waterloo’s Parkdale Plaza.

Waterloo Regional Police announced Sunday that a 14-year-old has been charged with arson in relation to the fire that broke out on Friday afternoon.

“It is a multi-million dollar loss, but to come down to a firm figure I don’t have that information at this time…” said
Acting Waterloo Fire Department Platoon Chief Earl Reitzel.

At a meeting in the Parkdale Plaza, in front of the burnt out shell out the Dollarama store, fire officials tried the best they could to give store owners a progress update.

Unfortunately it is still to early to tell when they will be able to return to business as usual.

More air quality and structural test need to be done.

Greg Watson owns the Water Depot, located about 20 feet away from the burnt out Dollarama store. He still doesn’t know for sure how much damage was caused to his store. “The chief told me on Friday night that I had smoke damage for sure. He said that I have tiles down so there’s almost certainly water damage as well, whether I have flame damage I don’t know.”

Watson tells 570 News it could be months before his store is back up and running.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is also involved in the investigation.
