10:00 – School Strike update

Ontario’s Education Minister says teachers’ unions should be giving out more information about upcoming strike action, so parents of young children can prepare if necessary. Liz Sandals says she wants to look at changing legislation that requires the unions to give a five-day strike notice, to force them to specify the type of strike they’re planning. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is planning a province-wide strike on Monday, but says it won’t confirm until 2 o’clock today if that will be a full strike or a work-to-rule. The elementary teachers’ strike comes as more than 70-thousand Ontario high school students are out of class after teachers at three boards walked out.
10:30 – Mayfair Hotel
Zyg Janecki, Councillor, City of Kitchener
Yet another effort has been launched to save Kitchener’s Mayfair Hotel. The building has been deemed unsafe and slated for demolition. Kitchener City Councillor Zyg Janecki is lobbying council to reconsider. He’s asking for a notice of motion to re-appraise the status of the Mayfair be considered at Monday night’s council meeting. He wants council to get the opinion of an expert in heritage restoration, about what it would take to repair the building’s structural problems and how much it would cost.
