11:00 – Salamanders

It’s not every day that we talk about the Jefferson Salamanders – and not every day that that our local issue makes national news. A story, posted on social media site ‘reddit’ got a couple thousand likes and a couple hundred comments. Comments range from approval for the plan – to finding humour in it – one post event suggests that the salamanders can soon take the LRT to speed up the whole migration process. The city of Kitchener has closed parts of Stouffer drive – until May 1st – so that the colony can cross from one side of the road to the other…they do this every spring.
11:30 – Stop telling women to smile
Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, artist, ‘Stop telling women to smile’
The Creator of the ‘Stop Telling Women To Smile’ Art Series was in Kitchener recently, speaking at Laurier’s Social Innovation Research Group symposium on gendered violence. While Tatyana Fazlalizadeh is now back in her native Brooklyn, her work lives on locally. Her mural, a self-portrait of her not smiling, is on the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region building, located on Frederick Street in Kitchener. The project was inspired by her own experiences of being verbally harassed, men telling her to smile, calling her ‘baby’ and so on. She says she’s received both support and criticism for the series – mainly from men.
