11:00 – Roundabout Rules

Kitchener Conestoga MPP Michael Harris’ private member’s bill is scheduled to be debated at Queen’s Park later this week. On Friday, he was in Kitchener – at the Homer Watson and Block line roundabout – calling for change, as things like signage, signalling and guidelines for pedestrians can vary from place to place in Ontario. He says “drivers need consistency, people need to know what to expect when they approach a roundabout, just as they do when they approach a traditional intersection,” as there aren’t any specific rules about roundabouts in the provincial Highway Traffic Act. This is his second attempt to call for province-wide rules; the study would include speed limits, entering and exiting, uniform road designs and use of crosswalks.
11:30 – Laurier Cutbacks

As we heard last week on 570 News, a silent protest was held, as Laurier students non-verbally displayed their displeasure ahead of a review by the board — which called for ten-million dollars in budget cuts. Despite the protest, the Board of Governors at Wilfrid Laurier University approved controversial recommendations of a report, that will affect student programs at the school. Those recommendations include cutting 18 courses from the University, including anthropology and cultural studies. A future process will determine what specifically gets cut, but students in those programs will be able to finish their degrees.
