WRPS launch firearms and prohibited weapons amnesty program

Over the next month, Waterloo Regional Police are hoping people will come forward with unwanted weapons as part of the first ever Firearms and Prohibited Weapons Amnesty program.
No charges should be laid in connection with the weapons, unless the firearms are wanted in connection with police investigations.
“What we run into, is situations where someone may be in possession of a firearm and the storage and possession of a firearm and the way they have it in their home at that time may actually be against the law.” says Olaf Heinzel, Regional Police Spokesperson. “So most of the offences that we’re looking at in terms of the amnesty would relate to storage and possession offences.”
Police say under no circumstances, should the weapons be transported by members of the public, so they’re asking people to call them and an officer will come pick them up.
Anyone wishing to submit items for destruction is asked to call the police communications center at (519)-653-7700 to make arrangements for an officer to pick up the items.
