Local pubs hoping to score as World Cup begins

Soccer fans across Waterloo Region are rejoicing as World Cup action gets underway.
This afternoon, host Brazil takes on Croatia in the first match of the tournament.
In celebration — and recognizing a golden opportunity for business — a number of bars and restaurants throughout Kitchener-Waterloo will be opening their doors and tuning in to the games to draw crowds.
Desiree Fatkin, owner of the Duke of Wellington, says she expects the pub to be wall-to-wall with people. “There will be people sitting on floors in front of the screens and standing room only,” Fatkin adds.
As Ruth Rajna, general manager of the Concordia Club, notes, part of the appeal for fans is getting into gear and watching with fellow supporters.
“They come all done up. They have their flags, they have their Germany shirts, their hats…they come prepared, for sure,” says Rajna.
Fatkin says fan support doesn’t stop there. “Some of them even paint their torsos so they don’t have to wear the shirts,” she chuckles.
