More students walking in the new school year

More high school students in Kitchener will be walking to school come September now that the public school board is taking a closer look at how far some students live in relation to their high school.
A bus zoning correction is affecting students attending Huron Heights in Kitchener.
Benoit Bourgault with Student Transportation Services tells 570 News that some students may have been receiving bus services for the past four years, even though they live closer than the 3.2 kilometre cut-off.
“Since the school opened, we may have had the wrong location. We changed the distance four years ago to 3.2 [km] and recently we became aware of the mistake on our map.”
44 families have been affected and Bourgault says although it can be a fair walking distance for some, they have to be equitable and make sure the same rules apply across the board.
Families worry about the price of a Grand River Transit pass at $64.00 per month.
The school board could save up to $15, 000 in bussing costs.
