New CEO for Via Rail

MONTREAL – The senior Harper cabinet minister who called for changes at the helm of Via Rail is welcoming word of a new chief executive.

But Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has some marching orders for Yves Desjardins-Siciliano.

Baird, who represents an Ottawa-area riding, says Desjardins-Siciliano must address issues with safety equipment at rail crossings in the capital.

He says the new Via head must also improve communications with the public in the national capital and rebuild the trust of the community.

Baird called for the ouster of interim C-E-O Steve Del Bosco, who’d been doing the job since the start of the year.

In an unusual move, the minister went public saying it was time for new leadership because of poor communication with the public and technical glitches at rail crossings.

Yesterday, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt replaced Del Bosco with Desjardins-Siciliano.
