A scary afternoon for some Kitchener residents. A water pumping station explosion released chemicals into the air.
The explosion happened at the Greenbrook pumping station on Greenbrook Drive and Stirling Avenue in Kitchener Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews, Police and EMS were all called to the scene.
Kitchener Fire Chief Tim Beckett tells 570 News it was a chemical reaction that caused the blast.
Although there is no confirmation, it’s believed ammonia was somehow mixed with chlorine.
Beckett says residents were advised to shut off ventilation systems and shut windows and doors but were later told there was no health concerns with the chemicals involved.
No one was injured including one person who was inside the plant at the time.
The building did sustain damage to its’ sides and a section of the roof.
Residents on scene tell us they heard two loud bangs around 5pm and soon after smelled the chemicals.
