Hamilton police officer dies after shooting

A Hamilton police officer has died after shooting himself at the central police station.

The announcement came down from Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

The Hamilton Spectator reports Staff Sergeant Ian Matthews shot himself in the locker room of the King William Street station after 1 p.m. Police said he was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Matthews was a 25-year member of the service.
