Many felt this day would never come, but a new National Hockey League season begins tonight.
Because of the lockout, teams will play just 48 games before the playoffs.
Play starts at 3pm and there are 13 games today, with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens set to hit the ice at 7 o’clock at the Bell Centre.
Toronto plays its’ home opener on Monday versus Buffalo. 570 News will have the broadcast at 7pm.
Jeff Marek is the host of Hockey Central on Sportsnet. He tells 570 News the teams that will likely benefit will be Edmonton and Carolina as most of their young stars have been playing in the American Hockey League. Marek’s reasoning? The AHL being so
similar to the NHL game.
He says players who have been skating in Europe should also have an advantage.
Marek has the New York Rangers as a Stanley Cup favourite in the Eastern Conference. He adds the West is wide open, but says contending teams should be the defending champion Kings and Vancouver.
