Thousand expected for major academic congress

More than 7,000 academics, students and policy makers are expected in Kitchener-Waterloo as Canada’s largest academic conference gets underway.
The Congress of the Humanities and Social Science has been going for 81 years and for the first time, it’s being hosted by the region’s two universities.
Wilfrid Laurier Communications Director, Kevin Crowley, says this year’s theme, Crossroads: Scholarship for an Uncertain World, “really tackles the idea that we really are academically and socially at a crossroads in terms of how our studies overlap with the world of technology.”
The eight day event includes a number of notable speakers, displays and social events. The keynote address will be delivered by Governor General David Johnston.
Crowley says there are a number of events open to the public. “We have a series of what we’re calling, ‘Big Thinking Lectures.’ We’re bringing in fairly well known academic names and names from literature to provide free public lectures.”
