Recreational hockey players will be raising awareness for heart health at the Kitchener Aud Complex this weekend.
It’s the 3rd annual Hockey for Heart Tournament, which runs today and Sunday.
Rob Weir started the tourney after his dad, Roger died of a massive heart attack during a shinny hockey game.
So far, over $25,000 has been raised this year.
The top fundraisers get to faceoff with a team of former pros tonight at 7 o’clock at the Kinsmen Arena.
Admission is free, but donations will gladly be accepted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
NHL legend Marcel Dionne and former Kitchener Ranger and Toronto Maple Leaf Todd Warriner will lace up the blades for the ProStars.
The issue hits close to home for Dionne. “My dad died of it…We’re all affected by it, everyday someone is affected by this.” Dionne told 570 News.
The former Red Wing, King and New York Ranger tries to stay active by playing hockey two times a week.
Warriner also spends about five hours on the ice each day at a hockey school he runs in Chatham.
“At this point for most of us, when you are near 40, you have to stick with it (remaining active) , but it’s not so easy.” said Warriner.
